Why did Jesus start with the Commandments? What was the function of the Law?
To show people that they needed a savior.
The apostle Paul said,
o “For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes” (Romans 10:4, HCSB).
He also said,
o “For no one will be justified in His sight by the works of the law, because the knowledge of sin comes through the law” (Romans 3:20, HCSB).
The rich young ruler came to the right doctor and received the right prescription. The prescription was tailor made for him. The prescription attacked the central symptom of his affliction.
Here it is in verse 22.
o “When Jesus heard this, He told him, ‘You still lack one thing: Sell all that you have and distribute it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me” (Luke 18:22, HCSB).
The young man had not kept all of the commandments. He had not loved God with everything that he was. He had made an idol of his wealth, power, and possessions.
But, he could give that up and follow Jesus.
