Gideon: A Biographical Study (Part 19)

Conclusion

I believe that we can summarize God’s call to Gideon in one word: trust. If we go all the way back to Gideon’s first encounter with God in the wine press, God was telling Gideon to do the job and trust in Him for the result.

As we try to live out our faith and be an effective ambassador for Christ in the workaday world, what is God telling us to do? He is telling us to do what we are called to do and trust in Him for the result.

The writer of Proverbs wrote the truth,

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do no rely on your own understanding; think about Him in all your ways, and He will guide you on the right paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6, HCSB).

Where are you? Are you in a wine press? Is it hard to live as a Christian in the workaday world? The answer to those questions may be yes for most of us. The popular culture is sinful and wants us to join them and applaud what they are doing. Jesus Himself meets us in the wine press and calls us to be “salt and light” in our generation (Matt. 5:13-16). Jesus calls us to trust in Him and be an influence for Him in this present generation.

Jesus says,

“In the same way, let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16, HCSB).

That takes trust in Him. But God is worthy of our trust and will keep His promises.
