A Judge and More
There is one more lesson that Gideon can teach us.
God gave Gideon a stunning victory against the Midianites. He became a judge over the people instead of a king. Gideon had the opportunity to lead the people in the right direction, but became a leader in idol worship. Because of these facts, I believe the last lesson becomes clear.
We cannot allow God’s provisions for us go to our heads.
The apostle Paul reminds us,
“For by the grace given to me, I tell everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he should think. Instead, think sensibly, as God has distributed a measure of faith to each one” (Romans 12:3, HCSB).
When we start taking credit for what God has done in our lives, we are in danger of falling into the same trap as Gideon. Gideon had the opportunity to leave a legacy among his people of following God.
But, he led the nation astray. It was a sad ending to Gideon’s biography.
