Introduction
You might be thinking to yourself, I’m not going to be leading a great army against anybody. Why should I look at Gideon? These biographies from the Hebrew Scriptures have a purpose for us as well.
Paul wrote to the Corinthian church,
“Now these things happened to them as examples, and they were written as a warning to us, on whom the ends of the ages have come” (I Corinthians 10:11, HCSB).
We may all be familiar with Gideon fighting the battle against the Midianites. We’ve heard various sermons about the fleece that he put out. We have heard sermons and taught lessons about whether or not we should “spread out a fleece” to discern from the Lord the answer as to His will for our lives or an important decision we must take. Gideon has lessons and examples for us. As someone who is very much interested in history and what we can learn from it for today, I don’t believe that we can take just those two examples. We have to look at the whole story of Gideon.
