Satan, the embodiment of rebellion against God and evil, is present in the Garden. His task is to entice the first humans to enter into a state of rebellion and sin.
Adam has one thing not to do. This is precisely what he did. Eve was tempted by Satan first and then gave the forbidden fruit to Adam who ate. Both of them exercised their free will in an attempt to act like God and determine good and evil for themselves.
