Read Genesis 12:1-3.
Do you remember your first job? Mine was with the Ouachita Parish Public Library in West Monroe, Louisiana. I learned a lot from that first job. But, I am not a librarian any more. I have had several vocational changes since then. However, my mission has remained the same. I am commissioned to be a follower of Jesus Christ. It’s the same thing for everyone who reads this.
The passage at the end of Matthew’s gospel which we call the Great Commission is a good summary of our mission as disciples. We are to go out and make disciples of Jesus, baptizing and teaching them what Jesus commanded. We see a foretelling of the Great Commission in God’s call to Abram. Even then, we see a God who sends. We don’t remember Abraham as a prosperous sheep farmer, but as the father of the nation of Israel through whom came the lineage of Jesus Christ. God told Abram that all the nations of the earth would be blessed through him. We are part of that legacy and blessing as well. As believers and followers of Jesus, we have been called to go out and do God’s work in this world. The question is will we remember our mission and decide to accept it.
