Question 11: What is Classical Apologetics?

Answer: Classical Apologetics is a major school of Christian Apologetics.

Comment: Classical Apologetics has been the dominant method in Apologetics in the history of the Christian church. It emphasizes the use of logical argumentation and reasoning methodology in defense of the Christian faith. This method begins by establishing the existence of truth and the existence of a deity using philosophical arguments and natural theology. The deity presented in the first phase of a classical argument is a generic deity. The classical argument then moves to the contention that this deity has been revealed in the life and person of Jesus Christ.

Adherents thus give arguments for a general monotheism and then give arguments for specific Christian truth. Classical Apologetics teachers believe that the Holy Spirit can use both types of arguments in the spiritual transformation of hearers.

Advocates/Teachers: William Lane Craig, Norman Geisler, R. C. Sproul, B. B. Warfield, C. S. Lewis, Peter Kreeft, Augustine
