Luke 18:18-23
Conclusion
As I was preparing this lesson, I began to ask myself the question, why did Jesus take time with this rich young ruler. Jesus, after all, knew what was in the man’s heart and knew that this man would make the free will choice to reject Jesus’s call to follow Him.
We don’t know what happened to this young man. He walked away and, literally, walked out of history.
So, what was the point of this conversation?
In the parallel account in Mark’s gospel, it says that,
o “Then, looking at his, Jesus loved him…” (Mark 10:21, HCSB).
The love of Jesus motivated everything that He did, not only in calling this young man, but for us as well. Jesus may never call us to sell everything that we have and give it all to the poor in order to follow Him.
But, Jesus does have some questions for us.
o Are there things in our lives that we put up as idols?
o Are there things that take priority over Jesus Christ in our lives?
We should be willing to put aside our idols and give the first place in our lives to Jesus Christ, the Great Physician who loves us, and follow Him.
