A Prayer for a New Political Season

Tomorrow, January 20, a new leader for the United States will be sworn into office. The peaceful transition of power is one of the hallmarks of the American political system, especially when one political party turns over leadership to the other political party.

As I mentioned last November, Christians have a responsibility to pray for the elected leadership of our country, no matter our personal political leanings (1 Timothy 2:1-4).

Allow me to remind you of the model for a prayer for this nation, our leaders, and the church.

“Heavenly Father, You are the one who is worthy of our ultimate loyalty. You were not surprised with the results of the election. God, You are working in both the winners and losers to achieve your purposes in this country and in the world.

God, ultimately Your purposes will work themselves out in this world. We ask that the Holy Spirit will work in the lives of our elected officials. Draw those who are believers into a closer relationship with You. For those who are not believers, we ask that the Holy Spirit draw them into a saving knowledge of You.

Father, the church is Your body and not an organ of any political party. No government or political leader will prevail over Your church. Lead believers, Lord, to follow You and be Your disciples. Lead us not to fear men, but trust in You.

In Jesus name, amen.

Tomorrow, a new page in American history will begin. Let us do our part. The time for regular prayer is now.

Pray for our leaders, even the ones you did not vote for.
